Who Is This Nikki Chick?

by Nikki · 28 comments

Welcome to NavigatingNikki and thanks for stoping by! You have now entered the alternate universe that is my world. In short, I’m a Texas bred brown skinned educated adventurer who LOVES to have a good time. I attempted, and survived (more or less) the nine-to-five lifestyle just long enough to save for a trip around the world, and now I’m doing it! This site is a window into my world, the far flung places I will visit, and much more. Consider this a formal invitation to join me as I attempt the unthinkable, a trip around the world, SOLO.

Who are you! Are you crazy?

Yes, as a matter of fact I am crazy, or so I’ve been told. But the truth is, I’m just a product of my environment. My mother is a very independent wander-struck adventurer, who also happens to be the best dang psychiatrist I know. While my father is a travel crazed politician, wielding a passport the size of a dictionary and spandex biking shorts, to more countries than he can remember, cycling through all of them. These two forces combined to form a superhuman anthropologist-travel addict who sees the world through a different lens.

Having gone on my first international trip at the age of 6 months, my passion for travel dates back to before I can remember. Life has taken me far beyond my southern roots many times before, leaving me with an inextricable case of wanderlust. As an admitted travel addict and anthropology major in college, I’ve come to realize that taking cultural leaps and bounds, throwing myself into new experiences, and appreciating the lessons the world has to offer are all at the core of my happiness.

They only have themselves to blame... Mom skydiving for her 50th; Dad in action sporting his usual Spandex-Helmet-Passport uniform; Mom and I playing with a Cheetah; Dad and I sledding down the Great Wall of China

After four wonderful years of college at Columbia University and a year in the conventional work force as a Marketing Coordinator for a Chamber of Commerce in Houston I found myself struggling with the prospect of spending the next 5+ years of my life with ten vacation days and career goals that sounded better than they actually felt. As always, my mind was, and still is transfixed on exploring the nooks and crannies of the globe. So between internships and part time jobs during college, and a full time job at home, I managed to slowly but surely save enough money to fund the trip of my life.

Ok, great, you ARE Crazy, but whats NavigatingNikki all about?

With this world journey and blog I will navigate my way through the amazing, unusual, hilarious, and inspiring world around me, charting my own life’s course along the way. Consider NavigatingNikki your teleport to wherever I am, whenever you want. I’ll be sharing every little piece of the action with you through videos, posts, and pictures.

But sharing MY experience is only half the fun. The other half is exposure. It’s not everyday that you see an American, an African American, or a female, let alone all three combined venture out into the world alone purely for the joy of it. Whether you represent all, one, or none of these, rarely sited minority’s in the world travelers wonderland, my hope is that you are inspired by my journey, and start planning your own. I’m here to help.

The Bigger Picture

Since all the “Nicole is Crazy” stuff out of the way, lets get to point. The REAL reason I started NavigatingNikki is because, after the initial “girl you cray,” response I get when sharing my story, I discover that I’m actually not unique at all. Everyone wants to travel. I’ve just chosen to take the scary, unthinkable, and downright insane step next. I’m doing it.

The goal of NavigatingNikki is to demystify the experience of global travel for those who need a little preview before they decide to get their feet wet. I want to show you that EVERYONE can travel the world, not just [insert preferred stereotype] people. Color, culture, and finances do not dictate your ability to go out and see the rest of the world first hand. Determination, planning, and guts do. Like I said before, I’m going to help you see this, and eventually, see yourself in my shoes. If you’re interested in gaining a global perspective, learning about extended travel, how to make it possible, and discussing the rewards and challenges that come along with the road, you’re in the right place. Keep your eyes peeled for posts on budgeting, planning, and tricks of the travelers trade, in addition to all the fun stuff. And if you need help getting started, feel free to contact me!

Enjoy the ride, and hopefully I’ll see you on the road sometime soon!
